At about 4 pm, the migrants who dropped from the towering barrier fell to the United States section of the border. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection notified the fire department, saying that eight persons had fallen off the wall. Among the hurt individuals, four of them were taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital. Three adults who had been traveling together with five children under 11 years old also went there. At the hospital, they made arrangements for looking after the kids while their parents received medical help.

The mass casualty incident at Mexico border shows the dangerous crossing attempt occurred amid a rise in the number of migrants injured from falls. This increase has been observed since the border wall height was raised to 30 feet in 2019 during Trump’s presidency. A study conducted by UCSD Health discovered that there were 375 “trauma-related incidents from falls” between 2019-2021, while only 67 such cases took place between 2016-2019 when the wall measured at a height of 22 feet.

The most recent event shows the serious dangers people who move to the U.S. illegally are in danger of facing. Some people who fight for their rights say that more strict border security causes more hurt and loss of lives, because people have to go through riskier paths and ways to get into the U.S.

Data tells us about the serious harm to people from dangerous crossing. In 2023, the Mexican consulate said that 29 people from Mexico died when they tried to cross into the San Diego area, and also another 120 got hurt. A man thought to be in his 20s years old passed away just days before the most recent event while trying to cross the border wall.

Joseph Ciacci, a doctor who specializes in brain surgery at UC San Diego Health, has experienced a fivefold growth in trauma cases because the height of the border wall increased. He treated almost 450 patients in 2021, who fell from the wall, compared to just less than 60 patients in 2019. The hospital is now directly facing this crisis on the border.

A big many people hurt in one place happens when there is a lot of anger and disagreement over people coming into the country without permission. Most American people think it’s a very serious problem if someone comes to the U.S. without permission, and many want to build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico to stop it.

As we near the year 2024 for choosing a president, the problem of immigration is predicted to be one of the main topics. This difficult and split up talk about it doesn’t seem to get any better because the number of people affected keeps growing at the border. For those who are migrants and got hurt in the most recent case, their dangerous travel has finished up with injury and a future that is not clear.
