The death of Paul Danan, the actor best known for his role as Sol Patrick in the Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks, has been attributed to a mixture of drugs, including heroin, cocaine, and other substances, an inquest has heard. Danan, aged 46, was found unresponsive at his home in Bristol on 15 January 2025 and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
An inquest into his death was opened at Avon Coroner’s Court on 11 March 2025. Coroner Marie Voisin was told that the provisional cause of death was “combined toxicity” resulting from the use of heroin, methadone, codeine, pregabalin, cocaine, and zopiclone, with benzodiazepine use listed as a secondary contributing factor. The hearing was adjourned to allow for the preparation of detailed reports, with a full inquest scheduled for 28 May 2025.
Background and Career
Born on 2 July 1978 in Leytonstone, East London, Danan gained prominence in the late 1990s for his portrayal of Sol Patrick in Hollyoaks, a character he played from 1997 to 2001. After leaving the soap, he transitioned to reality television, featuring in programmes such as Celebrity Love Island and Celebrity Big Brother. More recently, he hosted The Morning After With Paul Danan, a podcast that ran from 2019 to 2023.
Danan had been open about his struggles with addiction, speaking publicly about his battles with substance abuse and his attempts to seek help. His management released a statement following his death, describing him as “a beacon of light to so many” and expressing their sorrow at his passing at such a young age.
Inquest Details
During the inquest, coroner’s officer Alexis Camp told the court that there were “no family concerns” regarding Danan’s death and that no note had been found. It was also revealed that Danan had been due to appear at Warrington Magistrates’ Court on 16 January 2025 for a plea hearing related to charges of possession of cocaine and cannabis, as well as driving under the influence of drugs. These charges stemmed from an incident in October 2024.
Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed that they are not treating Danan’s death as suspicious.

Danan’s management added: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of Paul Danan at just 46 years old. He was known for his kindness and talent.”
